What we do

This program provides infants, children and youth with developmental disabilities access to the supports they need to live in their family homes, succeed in school and partake of all the experiences of childhood. The program promotes the family’s role as primary advocate for their child through a partnership based on supporting, modeling, mentoring and training. We promote inclusion in general education classrooms and prepare teenage students and their families for the transition to adulthood with better access to employment, post-secondary education, and full community participation.
Activities include:

  • Information and referral to public and human service organizations for access to basic needs and/or community resources
  • Individual advocacy includes:
    • Consultations (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
    • Review assessments, progress reports, IEPS
    • Crisis interventions
    • Mentor parents to advocate for their child’s needs using a person-centered approach
    • Facilitate difficult conversations
    • Assist in resolving differences
    • Assist in the development of IEPs (may include attendance at IEP meetings)

ACL advocates to meet the immediate health and safety needs of the people we serve. We continue to provide individual advocacy to people as they move out of crisis. We connect them with sources of emergency assistance and financial aid and mentor to identify the causes of crisis and help make a plan to avoid future crisis situations.

As part of our mission to promote attitudes, practices, programs and policies that enable people with IDD to be included as a natural and integral part of community life, we support family-led and community based projects and programs that amplify our work.
The ACL values opportunities to find more ways for people with IDD to participate in typical activities throughout their communities. We facilitate discussions, trainings and events that broaden perceptions within the community and deepen the capacity of organizations and people to include people with IDD.
The ACL also works to influence cultural and systems change through public policy advocacy, outreach and education.
