This program is specially designed around the culture and values of Latino families. This was in response to the absence of culturally competent advocacy, support and training which was compounding the barriers faced by Latinos with family members who have I/DD.  IN CJ, parents learn about their rights, how to support their child with a disability, how to advocate for their child and how to build independent living skills as their children move into adult life.

During monthly meetings, parents receive support and education and the children and teens (both with and without disabilities) have support to socialize. Music and art therapy are built into the program. Siblings of children with a disability access a sibling workshop which allows them to talk and learn about growing up with a brother or sister with a disability. Experts from the community come to talk about nutrition, behavior support, grief and loss, long-term care services, health care programs and more. All family members are welcomed and food is offered at each session.

The program helps parents and siblings

  • Understand the potential of children with disabilities
  • Employ the power of family engagement
  • Reduce isolation
  • Develop inclusion in various communities
  • Nurture parent leadership

Everybody is welcome. We don’t have child care but small children are welcome as well.

Parents have the opportunity to talk to other parents, built community and a network of families who face similar circumstances.

The groups also develop great ideas for activities and groups in the CJ program. We also provide workshops or presentations about specific areas on request of the families.

Caminando Juntos won the 2013 NOVA Award from the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County for innovation in human service programming.
